I've just replaced the seals on a set of WP forks from a 2008 KTM 250 SXF and am completely baffled on how to get the fork oil level set. They don't seem to be like other forks. I pumped the old oil out of the inner chamber, but how do you prime it and by how much. I'm pretty stuck.

KTMCC. 540 posts · Joined 2016. #2 · May 22, 2017. The manual also gives you the air chamber length just above the oil quantity. It's better with OC forks to work off an air gap. The manual suggests anything from 90mm to 120mm. 120mm giving you a plusher ride and less bottoming resistance.

Using oil levels is the most accurate way of measuring the volume of oil inside a fork. Oil levels are always measured with the stanchion and dampers fully compressed and with coil springs and spacers removed (where applicable) and is the ‘air gap’ between the top of the stanchion to the surface of the oil.

To measure the fluid fast and easy, take a spray bottle sprayer, and cut the little pipe @ 100mm for example. Stick the clean pipe down the fork tube and squirt until dry. Viola 100 mm air chamber. I ran heavier oil in my 950 forks and had good luck, but it never hurts to follow the manual.
Posted June 27, 2008. On those bikes you would want to measure how far down to the fluid from the top of the fork. The RM85 adjustable range is 110mm - 140mm from the top of the fork leg to the fluid level. With your rider weight, assuming stock fork springs, I'd start at 130mm.

Oil height is then determined by bottoming resistance. Put a zip tie around the bottom tube, side it all the way up and go ride, over jump a few things with high (380cc) oil height and see what happens. You should have the fork setup to have 20mm of unused travel at the BDVf.
